چکیده

Mortality among children under 5 years of age in developing countries has fallen dramatically in recent decades. Unfortunately, declines in neonatal mortality during this period have been less impressive. Neonatal mortality now accounts for >40% of under-5 mortality.1 About onequarter of neonatal deaths result from intrapartum-related conditions and their consequences (eg, birth asphyxia), 2 with an estimated 10 million newborns requiring some level of intervention to establish breathing and circulation at the time of birth.3 One strategy for reducing neonatal mortality is to improve the care of babies at the time of birth by improving the knowledge and skills of providers. Helping Babies Breathe (HBB), a low-cost and lowtech simulation-based educational program on newborn resuscitation, was developed to support this strategy. In this issue of Pediatrics, Arlington et al4 report the evaluation of large-scale implementation of HBB in Tanzania as a strategy to reduce neonatal mortality.

Survival of Extremely Preterm Neonates in a Resource-limited Setting

Background: Preterm birth is a major contributor to neonatal and under-five mortality, and births at lower gestational ages (GA) contribute more to these statistics. Most developed countries have succeeded in improving survival at extremes of GA, while most developing countries like Nigeria still lag behind. The objective of this retrospective study was to document the...

Staged implementation of a two-tiered hospital-based neonatal care package in a resource-limited setting in Eastern Uganda

Neonatal mortality remains a major global challenge. Most neonatal deaths occur in low-income countries, but it is estimated that over two-thirds of these deaths could be prevented if achievable interventions are scaled up. To date, initiatives have focused on community and obstetric interventions, and there has been limited simultaneous drive to improve neonatal care in the health facilities w...

Neonatal hypothermia in low-resource settings.

Hypothermia among newborns is considered an important contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality in low-resource settings. However, in these settings only limited progress has been made towards understanding the risk of mortality after hypothermia, describing how this relationship is dependent on both the degree or severity of exposure and the gestational age and weight status of the baby,...

NEONATAL MORTALITY IN RELATION TO BIRTH WEIGHT

730 low birth weight (LBW) neonates and 1460 controls were selected from 13,123 neonates born from October 1988 to June 1989 in 17 hospitals and maternity units in Tehran, and were compared for mortality in the first seven and up to 28 days of life (early neonatal period). In this study all low birth weight newborns are divided according to four sub-groups of birth weight, and the mortalit...
